Khabipov was prosecuted in the Case of 39 participants in the 2022 Karakalpakstan unrest, whose trial began in Bukhara on 6 February 2023. The proceedings addressed the July 2022 protests in Karakalpakstan, triggered by proposed constitutional amendments affecting the region’s autonomy. Authorities characterized the demonstrations as riots and charged participants with crimes against public order. However, observers consider the prosecutions politically motivated because they target individuals associated with the protest movement. The verdict was delivered on 17 March 2023, and several sentences were later amended by the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan on 12 June 2023.
