Begaliev was convicted in the Case of 39 participants in the 2022 Karakalpakstan unrest. The trial began in Bukhara on 6 February 2023 and concerned the July 2022 protests in Karakalpakstan, which were triggered by proposed constitutional amendments threatening the region’s autonomous status. Authorities described the events as mass riots, while many observers consider the prosecutions politically motivated because they target protest participants and critics of the constitutional reforms. The verdict was delivered on 17 March 2023, and some sentences were later revised by the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan on 12 June 2023.
