Trial Details:

In 2022, amid growing political tensions in Kyrgyzstan over the Kempir-Abad reservoir, a number of activists and opposition politicians were arrested on charges of “preparing to organize mass unrest” and “attempting to seize power by force.” Akyl Aytbaev was among those targeted.
As a land management specialist, Aytbaev had deep knowledge of the areas surrounding the Kempir-Abad reservoir and their significance. Using his expertise, he provided people with accurate information on the border dispute and explained the implications of the agreement. In particular, during a public gathering in the Özgön district, he spoke openly about the characteristics of the lands around Kempir-Abad and the possible consequences of the deal.
In October 2022, Aytbaev was arrested and a criminal case was opened against him. On August 28, 2023, he was transferred to house arrest. In June 2024, following the trial, Akyl Aytbaev was fully acquitted. The case under review is on appeal.
