He spent nearly a year in pre-trial detention before the trial, which was marred by violations, including restrictions on media access. On August 25, when the defendants were to deliver their final statements, Judge Kasymbekov barred journalists from filming and ordered them to leave the courtroom. Due to these violations and the refusal to hear defense witnesses, the defendants requested the judge’s recusal, which was denied. The prosecutor demanded that Mubarakhov and the other defendants be convicted under Article 272(1) and Article 24(3) of the Criminal Code and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. On August 26 2025, the court in Almalinsky District in Almaty sentenced Mubarakov to four years of restricted freedom. According to the court, Mubarakov along with four other activists was guilty of calling on people to disobey the authorities, to join or start riots, or to use violence against others. In addition, under article 50 part 3, he is now banned from participating in public activities or creating a political party for the next five years.
