Bolot Temirov
Bolot Temirov is Kyrgyzstani prominent investigative journalists and human rights defender, widely known for his work uncovering high-level corruption. In 2020, he founded the YouTube-based investigative platform Temirov Live, which exposed government wrongdoing and quickly became a major voice for accountability in the country. His courage and impact have earned international recognition. In 2021, the U.S. Department of State named him an International Anti-Corruption Champion, highlighting his role in advancing transparency in Kyrgyzstan. In 2025, he was honoured with the Committee to Protect Journalists’ International Press Freedom Award, acknowledging his resilience and commitment to investigative reporting despite harassment, criminal prosecution, and forced expulsion. Temirov has also been recognised by Front Line Defenders, which lists him as a human rights defender at risk and has documented the reprisals he faces for his work. Together, these awards reflect his standing as a leading voice against corruption and impunity in Central Asia.
Bolot Temirov currently lives in exile in Europe, having been forcibly deported from Kyrgyzstan in November 2022 after a Bishkek court unlawfully stripped him of his citizenship and ordered his removal to Russia. Despite the risks associated with his deportation and continued threats from Kyrgyz authorities, Temirov has remained committed to his journalistic mission and continues producing investigative content from abroad.
His wife and several colleagues in Kyrgyzstan have faced severe reprisals for their association with him. In October 2024, his wife, journalist Makhabat Tajibek kyzy, and members of the Temirov Live team were sentenced to lengthy prison terms, leaving their young son in the care of grandparents. His current situation remains precarious: he is unable to return safely to Kyrgyzstan, lacks secure residency in the European Union, and remains vulnerable to harassment by both Kyrgyz and regional security services. Nevertheless, he persists in exposing corruption, symbolising the resilience of independent media under authoritarian pressure.
Bolot Temirov has been subjected to a series of retaliatory arrests and criminal prosecutions directly linked to his investigative reporting into high-level corruption in Kyrgyzstan. His first major arrest occurred in January 2022, when masked officers from the Ministry of Internal Affairs raided the Temirov Live office in Bishkek. During the raid, police claimed to have “found” packets of drugs in his pocket—an allegation widely denounced by local and international observers as fabricated. Video from the raid showed officers forcibly restraining him and planting evidence, reinforcing concerns about politically motivated prosecution. Following public outrage, a court eventually acquitted him of the drug charges.
Shortly after, in April 2022, authorities initiated a second criminal case accusing him of “forgery” and “illegal border crossing” based on his alleged use of a Russian passport many years earlier. The charges bore no relation to his journalistic work and were seen as an attempt to sideline him after Temirov Live published investigations implicating relatives of senior government officials in corruption schemes.
Despite the lack of credible evidence, the pressure intensified. In November 2022, a court stripped Temirov of his Kyrgyz citizenship—an extraordinary measure rarely applied in politically sensitive cases—and ordered his immediate deportation to Russia, an authoritarian country where he has no meaningful ties and no legal status. The deportation was carried out within hours, without giving him an opportunity to appeal the ruling.
Across all of these cases, the procedural irregularities, the rapid escalation from administrative charges to the removal of citizenship, and the timing—each arrest closely following major corruption exposés—demonstrate a clear pattern: Kyrgyz authorities used the criminal justice system as a tool to silence Temirov and dismantle his media outlet. His arrests represent one of the most emblematic examples of the shrinking space for investigative journalism and free expression in Kyrgyzstan.
