Rakhmanov was convicted in the Case of 39 participants in the 2022 Karakalpakstan unrest, heard in Bukhara beginning on 6 February 2023. The proceedings concerned the July 2022 protests against constitutional amendments affecting the autonomy of Karakalpakstan. Authorities characterized the demonstrations as riots, while observers consider the prosecutions politically motivated because they target individuals involved in protest activities. The verdict was issued on 17 March 2023, and several sentences were later amended by the Supreme Court on 12 June 2023.
Rakhmanov was sentenced to 7 years’ imprisonment in a penal colony.
