Omirzakov was convicted in the Case of 39 participants in the 2022 Karakalpakstan unrest, tried in Bukhara beginning on 6 February 2023. The proceedings addressed the July 2022 protests against constitutional amendments affecting Karakalpakstan’s autonomous status. Authorities characterized the demonstrations as riots and accused participants of committing acts of violence and disorder. However, many observers consider the prosecutions politically motivated because they target individuals involved in protest activities. The verdict was issued on 17 March 2023, and several sentences were later revised by the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan on 12 June 2023.
