Zhumabekov was convicted in the Case of 39 participants in the 2022 Karakalpakstan unrest, tried in Bukhara beginning on 6 February 2023. The case relates to the July 2022 protests in Karakalpakstan against proposed constitutional amendments affecting the region’s autonomous status.
